What an afternoon we’ve had here at the office. Fitness guru and fitness crush Jillian Michaels stopped by to promote her Maximize Your Life Tour.

Our deputy editor, and resident health enthusiast, Laurie Jennings had the chance to ask Michaels some questions about motherhood, her motivation and how we can all reach our goals.

1. On what people can expect from her tour “It’s about getting the life you want, not the life you think you should be living.” She encourages her audience to form an emotional connection to the things they want in a very specific way. Know what your goals are and ensure you do an “emotional inventory” every day. If you’re looking for a change, “have an exit strategy and do your research to have the skill set and tools to set yourself up for success.”

2. On her purpose Her goal is to wake people up to their potential: “We're all equally as deserving. We often ask 'why me' instead of 'why not me'.” 3. On balance Eighty percent of her time and energy goes to work and her children, while 20 percent goes to herself. If one area starts to fall apart she’ll adjust to suit that. “If you want to be a better mom you have to take the time for yourself,” she explains.

4. On ensuring her family eats well Admittedly this is one area Michaels doesn’t struggle with. “My kids don’t want to go to McDonald’s because they don’t know it exists,” she confesses. Her kids eat salad, sushi and Indian food. “If they don’t know about it, they don’t want it,” is her motto. Simply put she says, “Don't eat things that aren't food.” Seems easy enough.

5. On motivation As someone who hates working out, Michaels says being active helps with her mood. It’s about finding your why and a huge part of her motivation is that getting to the gym makes her look better, feel better, sleep better and have more energy. “A healthy body is your foundation for success in all areas of your life,” she believes.
