Intern Programs at Chatelaine Magazine

Chatelaine is Canada's favourite leading women's magazine, with a readership of almost 4 million. Joining the team as an intern is a great way for budding writers, editors, designers and marketers to hone their craft, learn about the industry, and get real-life work experience in their chosen field. Most internships are unpaid, but offer invaluable exposure to the industry and material for a portfolio.

Find your niche in one of our eight internship programs, all detailed below. We accept applications on a rolling basis throughout the year (except where noted). Please apply by emailing your cover letter and resume to internships@chatelaine.rogers.com.

Style Intern

You are fascinated with fashion, with a keen interest in the style industry, the ability to work well with others, and naturally organized and detail-oriented. The successful candidate will be available four days a week over a four-month period.

Style interns run our fashion closet, cataloguing samples, tracking clothing and beauty products for photo shoots, couriering items back to vendors and maintaining contact lists for style editors. The intern may also occasionally help on-set at photo shoots. They also contact vendors to check pricing, sizing and clothing and cosmetic details to help the fact-checking department.

Home Intern

You have a good knowledge of local and national home retailers, a keen interest in design and decorating and a passion for magazines. You are available for a four-month period, with a minimum availability of three days of week. A car is not necessary, but definitely useful.

Home interns work closely with the home editor to help put together content and photo shoots, as well as sometimes produce and write articles for the magazine and website. The role includes general office maintenance (about 25%), correspondence and mailings (25%), assistance sourcing for and producing stories (30%) and general assistance on photo shoots (20%). Please bring a portfolio or work or magazine tears if you are contacted for an interview.

Test Kitchen Intern

You have culinary training (although formal cooking school is not a must), a keen interest in magazines and publishing, and you're highly organized and detail-oriented. Writing skills and training in nutrition is an asset. The successful candidate is available three to four days a week over a four-month period.

Test kitchen interns are an integral part of the food department. They help with recipe development and testing, writing recipes, blogging for chatelaine.com, grocery shopping, kitchen organization, occasional food styling and assisting at photo shoots.

Art Intern

You work well with others and have a keen eye for detail and a strong sense of typography, balance and white space in design. You're also proficient in Adobe Creative Suite. The successful candidate must be available full-time for a three to four-month period.

Art interns work closely with the entire art department to successfully design the magazine. Tasks include illustrations, maintenance of the dummy book, scanning, image research and attending in-house photo shoots. Interns may design some pages or in-house advertisements. Short-listed candidates will be contacted for an interview and portfolio review.
