Caramelized Apples au Gratin

Ingredients
2 tbsp (30 mL) butter
2 cooking apples (Cortland, Empire, Spartan or Delicious), halved and cored
1/3 cup (75 mL) pecan pieces
1/2 cup (125 mL) maple syrup or honey
1/3 lb (150 g) Canadian Gouda, thickly sliced

Preparation
  1. Preheat broiler. In a frying pan, melt butter and cook apples over low heat for 4 or 5 minutes until golden. Transfer apples to an ovenproof dish, hollow side up. Add pecans and maple syrup to pan, bring to a boil and remove from heat. Spoon evenly over apples. Cover with Gouda and broil until cheese is melted and golden.

    Serve as an alternative to a cheese plate or dessert.
