Microneedling for acne scars: Everything you need to know

The procedure stimulates collagen production and is safe across all skin tones.
Micro-needling

Microneedling is exactly what it sounds like — a procedure that involves hundreds of tiny needles running over the skin to puncture it. Why would you do that to yourself? For deep acne scars, a "bottom-up" approach is needed, says Dr. Jerry Tan, a Windsor-based dermatologist who specializes in acne scarring.  Microneedling goes beyond shedding a layer of skin to reduce the appearance of scars and actually encourages new growth by wounding the skin with tiny punctures, stimulating collagen production.

While microneedling has a similar effect to laser procedures, a session can cost half as much. Plus, it's safe across all skin tones, whereas with some types of laser there can be a risk of hyper-pigmentation for people with light brown and deeper skin tones. Multiple sessions are typically needed, as the effects are more subtle than with laser. It can take up to three months to see full results since that's how long it takes for new collagen to form. Here are the basics:

What it's good for: Deep scarring, including ice-pick, rolling and boxcar scars

Skin tone: Safe across all skin tones.
