We Slept On It: Endy Hybrid Mattress Review

Can't decide between a foam or coil mattress? This medium-firm, made-in-Canada hybrid mattress might be for you.

My husband and I share our king bed with at least one dog at all times—sometimes two. On occasion, when things get really wild, our cat also joins us. As a result, our seven-year-old traditional coil mattress with firm support has seen a lot of wear. So I was excited to test the Endy Hybrid mattress from the beloved, made-in-Canada mattress brand. (Note: Endy provided a free mattress for my review.)

What is the Endy Hybrid mattress, anyway?

A mix of foam and coil, hybrid mattresses are often considered the best of both worlds. Some foam mattresses aren't as supportive as coil and may have issues with sagging. On the flip side, some coil mattresses may not provide adequate pressure relief or solid motion isolation (more on this later).

The Endy Hybrid, as the name suggests, is a coil and foam hybrid. It has a six-inch layer of pocketed high-carbon steel coils as well as multiple foam layers, including a layer of the brand's proprietary open-cell comfort foam for breathability and a bottom layer of high-density foam to help the mattress maintain its firmness.

The Endy Hybrid appealed to me over a purely foam mattress because my husband and I are both side sleepers who enjoy firm support. Technically, the Endy Hybrid provides the same medium-firm support as the Endy Classic, but its coils are said to provide "firmer lower back support."

Setting up the Endy Hybrid

The Endy Hybrid arrived quickly. (Orders ship in one day or less with same-day delivery available in Toronto.) The day after I ordered my mattress, I came home to find the Endy box sitting on my porch.

In full disclosure, it was harder than I thought it would be to drag the mattress box up the stairs and around the landing to our second-floor bedroom. (I may have yelled at my husband several times during this process; this is not Endy’s fault.)

You can also opt for full-service delivery, which includes assembly, for $99. In the future I would splurge for this service. The king-size mattress and box weighs 140 lbs in total, which is quite heavy for two non-body builders to manoeuvre.

Once we got the mattress into our bedroom, unboxing was seamless. After we removed the tightly-coiled, plastic-wrapped mattress from the box, we placed it on our existing box spring. (You can also set up the Endy Hybrid on a slatted frame or bed frame, no box spring required.)

Once unwrapped, the mattress unfurled in a very satisfactory manner and neither of us detected any strong new mattress odour.

It's worth noting that due to the Endy Hybrid's coil layer is slightly taller than the Endy Classic: 13 inches compared to 10. That said, my standard king sheet set fit the Endy Hybrid just fine.

Our Endy Hybrid Mattress review

On first impression, the Endy Hybrid felt incredibly luxurious thanks to the foam-lined plush quilted top layer. We felt like we were sinking into the comfiest, cushiest, coziest hotel bed. (As did our dogs, who both immediately jumped on this memory foam mattress.)

The Endy Hybrid was ready for sleep on day one and is said to reach “perfect comfort” within a week. It was an absolute delight to sink into the quilted top layer every night. I also felt completely unaware of my husband's tossing and turning (and he tosses and turns a lot.)

In mattress speak, that means there was no "motion transfer"—my husband's movements were far more noticeable on our coil mattress. We also also woke up feeling cool, not overheated, each morning. (This is thanks to the Endy Hybrid's breathable foam and pocketed coil layers, which whisk body heat away from the mattress. Some types of foam, on the other hand, actually trap heat in the mattress.)

Final verdict

Despite the very high-quality feel of the Endy Hybrid, after weeks of sleeping on it my husband and I both still woke up wishing for a little more support. This is absolutely no fault of Endy, which clearly states the Hybrid offers medium-firm support. (Moreover, a medium-firm mattress is typically the best bet for the majority of sleepers.)

And many other side-sleeping reviewers happily note the firmness of the hybrid model. But for whatever reason, we realized that we both preferred the support of our traditional coil mattress.

While the Endy Hybrid did not end up being our forever mattress, we moved it into our spare room—much to the delight of our first set of guests. Despite having different preferences for firmness, they both absolutely loved the Endy Hybrid. (It's also worth noting that our reviewer loved the all-foam original Endy mattress.)

If you prefer a mattress-in-a-box with more support than a purely foam mattress, the Endy Hybrid may be for you. Just note that in my opinion, the degree of support errs more on the medium side than firm. That said, your first mattress purchase from Endy.com comes with a 100-day risk-free guarantee.

If you don’t like the mattress, it will be gifted to a donation partner and you’ll receive a full refund. You truly have nothing to lose.

How We Test Mattresses At Chatelaine

Our testers sleep on each mattress for a minimum of 30 days, which experts recommend as a decent window for determining whether a mattress is the right fit for your needs. (For more expert insights on mattress shopping, see our post on buying a mattress below.)

Aside from comfort, we evaluate each mattress on the following criteria:

Edge support What is the degree of support around the edges of the mattress? This is important for people who frequently sit on the edge of the bed, as if there isn't strong edge support the edges will start to sag over time.

Motion isolation Could we feel our partner's movements—whether it's tossing and turning or getting up in the middle of the night? A mattress with strong motion isolation will prevent this.

Off-gassing How long did it take for the mattress to lose any noticeable odour after being unpacked? Clean, easy-to-breathe air is important to us.

How well it kept us cool Did the mattress trap heat as we slept, or did we feel cool throughout the night?

Return policy Does the company allow for at least a 30-day trial period?

Did our standard sheets fit? Some mattresses are deeper than others, which can interfere with how sheets fit.

Weight How much does the mattress way? Some experts correlate mattress weight with mattress quality, meaning a heavier mattress is likely to be made with better quality materials.

Above all, please note the mattress-buying process is highly subjective and it's a big purchase. This is why it's crucial to buy a mattress with a generous exchange or return policy.
