Whether it be the first star of the night or a birthday candle, if you ask mini sous chef what she wished for the answer is always the same: cake. So with so much love for this particular dessert, I knew Chatelaine’s recipe for Vanilla cake with summer fruit would create a high level of excitement in our kitchen.

I was recently in the market for a tub of vanilla ice cream but after 15 minutes in the grocery store’s frozen section (where I read practically EVERY label), I left empty handed. Why? Because I couldn’t recognize much past 'sugar' and 'cream.' So I decided it was time for homemade – the old school way (read: no fancy ice cream maker)

This would be an ideal dessert for a dinner party or family gathering, because you can get away with small slices. Unless you’re like us and believe that when it comes to cheesecake, bigger is always better.

Perhaps the best way to coax this baby out of an obviously too-comfortable womb would be to invite it to a birthday party, complete with a freshly made cake. Even if my plan to entice this baby to come out and join us didn’t work, at least the rest of us fully gestated people could enjoy a nice dessert while impatiently waiting for my labour to begin. I chose the Carrot Cake with Fluffy White-Chocolate Icing recipe for baby’s birthday cake. Plus, I had been promising my sister-in-law/housemate/student to make it for months now. Carrot cake is her absolute favourite cake in the world.

Sorry baby brother, but your pancakes are no longer the best pancakes I’ve ever had. I just finished making (and eating) the fluffiest, tastiest pancakes using the Best buttermilk pancakes recipe. Don’t fret, though, I’ll share the recipe with you.
