Should you wear mini skirts after 35?

Q: Can I wear a mini skirt after 35?

A: First of all, let’s define the type of mini skirt in question because not all minis are created equal. Is it a piece of cloth resembling a headband in both size and fabric, stretching itself against all odds to barely cover your bottom? The answer is no. You should not be wearing that type of mini skirt at any age…not a classy look.

You have to choose potentially risqué garments wisely and wear them in a way that is subtly sexy, not overt. Headband mini? Absolutely not. But a draped silk mini with a hemline hitting your thighs at their thinnest part, yes!

Pair it with a structured blazer and blousy top and you’re age-appropriate. In cooler weather add a pair of opaque tights and you’re covered.

I’m a strong believer in the ‘if you got it, flaunt it’ way of thinking, with no best-before date attached. If you’ve got gorgeous gams, show them off! Clearly this rule was developed in an era when turning 35 years old marked the end of a certain type of youth, and the on-set of matron-hood. But we live in an era where 35 plus isn’t old anymore. Not even close!

Most likely it’s a time when you’ve become truly comfortable with who you are, and it’s way too early to be restricting yourself and your wardrobe. If you’ve logged hours at the gym toning your thighs, or, better still, are naturally blessed, why cover up just because a certain birthday rolls around? Hollywood’s leading ladies certainly aren’t doing it. Not that Gwyneth Paltrow or Jennifer Lopez are exactly average, but they send a message: “I’m over 35 and my legs are one of my best features, thank-you-very-much and if I want to wear a mini skirt I won’t abide by some silly, out-of-date rule.” And neither should you.
