Open up your kitchen closets and get creative with your arrangements. Everything from cereal bowls to vintage flour sifters will work. Mixing leafy vegetables or herbs with gorgeous flowers is another great way to shake up the traditional flower arrangement.

Start by lining the edges of your bowl with leafy greens and fill in as you go, leaving your prime produce for the top. A few overhanging leaves soften the edges and keep the arrangement farmers’ market casual. Or try lining a cake platter with leaves of dusty miller and topping it with seasonal gourds.

It’s the perfect spot to place small groupings of vases and containers. Keep the colours of the vases, flowers and vegetables in similar hues to create a feeling of coherency.

Many late-autumn vegetables and leafy greens make unique specimens with which to fill your urns and vessels. We tried everything from bunches of curly parsley piled en masse to hardy flowering baby kale “roses” in hues of pink, cream and green. To make your centrepieces last longer, replace the water every other day.
