Our favourite summer comfort foods

I was instantly taken back to my old high school cafeteria, where I remember indulging in comfort foods - pints of Haagen-Daaz cookies and cream ice cream and mashed potatoes. I clearly had a thing for creamy stuff.

Our favourite summer comfort foods Masterfile

Last week, I was invited to check out The Drake Hotel's new "Dining Road Show" - a cool pop-up restaurant concept within their own space in Toronto. They turned part of their dining room into a completely different restaurant and it will have rotating themes, decor and menu. Currently, the space has been transformed into a faux summer school with a whimsical cafeteria theme. The dining tables are dressed with Rubik's cube salt shakers, lunch boxes and, of course, - duo-tang folder menus packed with comfort foods you surely will remember as a kid (does anyone remember Passion Flakies?).

I was instantly taken back to my old high school cafeteria, where I remember indulging in comfort foods - pints of Haagen-Daaz cookies and cream ice cream and mashed potatoes. I clearly had a thing for creamy stuff. These days, I opt for chicken soups to replenish my soul. I took a poll in the Chatelaine Kitchen to see what other comfort foods were on top of everyone's list:

Here are some of our other favourite summer comfort foods (best eaten on warm stormy nights!):

Food Editor, Claire, loves our BBQ chicken pizza — a shout-out to my many happy years in Halifax!

Associate food editor, Lyn, loved - and always will love - the classic macaroni and cheese.

Lastly, our kitchen intern, Christina, turns to chicken pot pie for a pick-me-up.
