While the Oscars red carpet leads with stunning (albeit a tad safe) gowns, the Met Gala hits next level fashion-status with celebrities going all-out with their looks. If you need a refresher, check out Rihanna’s epic gown from 2015. Designed by Chinese designer Guo Pei, the 5-metre (!) train had 23 kg of embroidery. Another favourite? Lupita Nyong’o’s sassy net and feather Prada confection at the 2014 Gala. The see-through flapper-esque look is exactly what we’ve come to expect from this event — completely impractical, but absolutely amazing.
Each year, the glam fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute takes its theme from an institute exhibition. For 2017, all eyes are on designer Rei Kawakubo from Comme des Garçons. She's known for her experimental silhouettes (read: not what you’d wear on a typical Monday night) that seamlessly meld art and fashion. And Monday night's display did not disappoint — celebs fully embraced the out-of-this-world looks.
So sit back and feast your eyes on these larger-than-life fashions.
One of the few guests rocking the theme designer’s creations, Rihanna’s epic patchwork of colourful fabrics was crafted into 3-D ruffles.
