Winter hair: Five ways to add va-va volume

Winter doesn’t need to be synonymous with hat head, no matter how low the thermometer drops. Because even though we all end up beneath a hand-knit and wool-y, pom-pom’ed version, there are ways to keep your style up-lifted.
Here’s how:
1. Wash and moisturize with a volumizing shampoo and conditioner
Between the hot and dry forced-air being pumped into your workplace, condo and grocery story and the take-your-breath-away cold outside, your hair is being sucked dry, leaving it limp and lifeless. And that’s before you squish a toque over top. Palma Anshilevich, Bangstyle’s resident Canadian artist says that our first defense is to use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner.
“They are designed to swell the hair shaft,” she explains. “This moisturizers the hair and gives it a thicker texture along with bounce and fullness.”

2. Dab on a little serum
Yup, you read right: serums aren’t just for smoothing frizz, adding a dollop to damp hair will actually infuse your locks with body and protect it from the fluctuations in temperature.
“They are designed to give the hair added nutrients, which will help protect the hair shaft and rebuild any damage,” says Anshilevich. “Adding a serum to your hair daily, at this time of the year, will not weigh your hair down, instead it will help your cuticles stay closed and add moisture, which will help with fullness and body.”

3. Use a styling product
Hair styling products, like: mousse and volumizing sprays can add volume to straight, fine and thin hair, says Daniel Naumovski, a portfolio artist with L’Oréal Professionnel and the co-owner of Taz Hair salons (www.tazhair.com) in Toronto. The foam of the mousse expands the hair shaft and coats it as it dries, while a spray adds a sticky/gritty quality. Both “give the hair volume and more texture, making the hair look and feel thicker,” says Naumovski.

4. Spray on a dry shampoo
After blow-drying your hair, spray a dry shampoo onto the part line and roots, advises Naumovski. Then lightly ruffle your hair to distribute the product evenly and watch your limp, flattened locks transform with a perky bounce.
“Dry shampoos are typically powder or clay based so they absorb your natural oils,” explains Naumovski. “That gives your hair a boost.”

5. Spritz on a finishing spray
Misting a fine layer of a volumizing hair spray onto your hair will help lock in your style and keep hat-head at bay. Stuck outdoors for more than an hour? Anshilevich advises applying a second coating of hairspray once you’re back inside. As you do so, simply: “place your fingertips at your roots and move your fingers in small circular movements along your scalp,” says Anshilevich. “Doing this will bring bounce and volume back to your style.”
