How to find the best denim for your shape

Our assistant fashion editor, Tyler Franch, shows you how to find the best jeans for your shape.

To outfit our editors and models on today’s show, we visited jean emporium, Over The Rainbow in Toronto. They carry nearly 100 different denim brands in various shapes and sizes, along with on-site tailoring and experienced consultants.

Here are the three looks highlighted in the video above:

Body type: Slim
Best fit: Medium rise with a straight-skinny leg
Details: Front and back pockets that flatter this body type
Pair them with: this fit has the most versatility. Can go light or heavy with a top. We love the classic look of the white tee and the pop of colour in the shoe.

Body type: Petite
Best Fit: Mid-rise to elongate torso, Skinny leg
Details: Avoid whiskering on denim, which can add bulk to legs.
Pair them with: A fun blouse and a great pair of platform sandals to elongate the legs

Body type: Curvy
Best Fit: High rise, flare beginning just above knee
Details: Length- make sure jeans just skim the floor
Pair them with: We love the tailored blazer with a flared jean look as it creates a natural waist which flatters this body type.

Interview with a denim expert: Over The Rainbows’ womanswear buyer, Genia Albi, shares her best tips for finding the perfect pair of jeans.

Q. Most women do not enjoy the process of purchasing a new pair of jeans, so how does your shop meet this challenge?

A. Firstly, we offer an easy and warm environment with a knowledgeable and well-trained staff. We provide one-on-one service and have the largest selection of denim in Canada – we have a jean for all body types.

Q. What is the most flattering denim style for a petite woman?

A. Petite women look best in a straight leg that is trim to the body.

Q. What is the most flattering denim style for a curvy woman?

A. Look for a boot cut jean to balance the silhouette, and a higher, contoured waistband also helps with comfort.

Q. What is the most flattering denim style for a boyish, slim figure?

A. The slender silhouette has many options, and most styles tend to look great. In this case, I would suggest something that not only looks great but also feels great.

Q. How can a woman with a short torso use her jeans to elongate that area?

A. A lower rise jean will help elongate a short torso.

Q. Your shop offers on-site tailoring, so what do you find is the biggest issue fit-wise from Canadian women?

A. We tend to shorten and taper the legs, and take in waist and let out the waist most. We also do the perfect original hem, which we are known for.  You should never have to compromise fit for length. Also, we provide maternity panels for our pregnant customers.

Q. What’s the best way to care for your denim?

A. To wash, turn your pair inside out and use a mild detergent on a warm setting. Hang to dry. If you are looking to soften your pair after a wash, then throw them in a dryer when they’re slightly damp for 10 minutes.

Q. What are some of new and exciting denim trends for spring?

A. Skinny is still the silhouette of choice, however slim boyfriend jeans will be huge along with crop denim roll-ups. Plus, colour, prints, and lighter shades of denim will dominate with lots of holes and destruction. Keep your denim jackets and shirts as well. And, believe it or not, the denim overall is making a come back, too!
