Carson Kressley's six style tips

The former Queer Eye for the Straight Guy fashion guru gives advice on how to look great every day

He’s the ‘fashion philanthropist’ who found fame on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, and now Oprah has snapped him up. Here are Carson’s top tips on how to look your best: 1. Pare down your wardrobe. Our closets are overflowing, yet we say we have nothing to wear. Clear out everything you haven’t worn in a year or two. Remember, things that don’t fit—too big or too small—are just a buzz kill in the morning. 2. Keep a record. If you’re feeling good in an outfit, take a picture, print it and stick it up on the bathroom mirror so you see your potential every day. 3. Mix it up! Our eyes love contrast. If you’re wearing something tailored on top, go snug on the bottom and vice versa. If your look is very rocker, add something pretty and girlie, like pearls or stud earrings. 4. Make sure it fits. Even the most expensive clothing won’t look good if it’s ill-fitting. You can shop anywhere and with a good fit, you look polished. 5. Always accessorize. Forever 21 and Topshop (at the Bay) make amazing necklaces and bracelets that you can freshen up with every season. 6. Just be yourself. I grew up a nerdy little gay kid thinking something was wrong with me. When I got an Emmy for Queer Eye for the Straight Guy everyone said, “We love you because you’re gay.” Be yourself and people will love you for who you are. Carson mantra: “You have to remember that you’ve got something nobody else has. It might be great eyes or great knees, but everybody has something amazing!” Catch more of Carson at CarsonKressley.com.
