Getty ImagesGreat hair starts at the scalp — if it’s oily, dry or flaky it will affect the health of your hair follicles and ultimately the way your locks look. First, identify the specific scalp concern. Then head to the beauty aisle to get a scalp treatment for your hair type — be it a nourishing oil or an anti-dandruff product— and give your scalp a massage with it at least once a week to stimulate circulation and treat your issue.

When you’re lathering up in the shower you could be doing more harm than good if you’re using the wrong cleanser on your tresses. Look for a product that contains antioxidants to protect hair and botanical ingredients to treat it simultaneously. If your hair is colour treated, dry or curly make sure to look for a natural product with gentle cleansing ingredients and extracts.

(Photo Tom Szuba)While you might try to avoid the hairdresser when you’re growing out your hair, to get a long and healthy mane you need to cut it every six weeks. Get a stylist to give you a clean crop to start and then go every few weeks for maintenance. Also, look at the technique your stylist uses — razors are often used by stylists to create piece-y waves but can leave your ends frizzy. When you can’t get to the stylist and you start seeing split ends apply a nightly cream to seal them in and reduce further breakage.

Cornerstone Media Productions IncIf you love styling products this step is for you. Mousses, sprays and serums can make your hair look glossy in the long run but ultimately they can cause buildup and make your hair look dull and lifeless. The solution to your overstyling? Grab a detoxifying shampoo. Look for a sulfate-free one to remove buildup and pollution on the hair shaft.

Frizziness, flyaways and general fuzziness are all caused my dryness. Coating hair in a rich balm or treatment and leaving it on overnight or for at least ten minutes in the shower is a surefire way to revive your style. If you’re constantly dying or styling your hair, make sure to stock up on a deep conditioner.

Nobuo NikiIf you’re a heat-styling addict it might be the reason your hair is looking less than supple. High temperatures damage the hair shaft, leaving it looking dull and making hair more brittle. Keep the temperature down and give hair a break by letting it air dry. Try a styling tool that has a treatment if you must heat it up or make sure to spray in a thermal protectant to coat each strand before applying heat.

Instead of stripping your hair of essential oils, extend your next blow dry and wash with a dry shampoo. Simply spritz it on your roots, let it sit to absorb oil, then flip hair upside down and quickly blow dry for volume or brush the powder through. It will save you time in the morning and allow your natural oils to nourish your own hair.
