The face for fall

This fall, there are some clear and defined beauty trends, such as the strong brow and a prominent lip. To complement these seasonal standouts, we asked top experts, like Revlon’s Gucci Westman and Shayna Shapiro from Nars, for their insider trade secrets.

Brow time

Makeup experts everywhere will tell you, the brows frame the face and must not be overlooked. There’s no perfect brow shape for everyone, but start by getting a professional brow shaping at a salon. Once you’ve had a professional shaping, upkeep the look by plucking along the natural line of your eye, making sure to groom the first with a brush to catch hairs out of place. Tweeze the hairs from on top of the inner corners and underneath the outer corners to enhance your brows. Fill sparse or light brows in with a powder product – it looks more natural than a pencil and allows for shading – and add a highlighter on the brow bone.

The right foundation

Not only is choosing the right shade of foundation important, but the texture is key to making your skin look dewy, not cakey or oily. If you’re yellow, balance it with a pinkish foundation shade and if you have pinkish undertone look for one with a bit of beige, say makeup experts. If you have oily skin start with a primer and opt for a more matte foundation and if you suffer from dryness get a makeup pro at a beauty counter to help you pick out a liquid product that has a moisturizing property. Now onto the correct application and prep. You want to reduce shadows and redness in the areas around the eyes, chin, forehead, bridge of the nose, under the jaw, and around the nasolabial fold by applying a slightly lighter foundation in these spots with a brush. Then go over the entire face with a matching shade very lightly, blending each area, according to Gucci Westman from Revlon. Finish with a concealer on any problem areas and blend an illuminator on your cheekbones, brow bone and lids.

Hair care

If your locks are dry and frizzy, you’re likely not protecting them from heat styling like the hairstylists do. First, coat your mane in a frizz protecting spray as you style — spraying each individual section before you straighten or curl. If you’re looking for stick straight locks, make sure you’re concentrating the iron on the smallest sections possible to concentrate the heat — thus making it longer lasting. Look for ionically charged straightening irons and hair dryers for the best results. If you’re still fighting frizz and static, experts recommend a boar hairbrush over a synthetic and make sure to comb any product through your hair before styling to evenly distribute it.

Get lippy

There’s no doubt that lipstick is having a moment. Red lipstick is a classic that instantly updates your look, especially during party season, says makeup artist François Nars. These dramatic looks are ideal for soirees of all kinds. If you’re not ready to commit to full-on colour, try a sheer lip colour alone or on top of a matte lip. “It will give a matte lip more dimension with subtle shine,” says Shayna Shapiro, Lead Trainer for Nars. Before swiping on a daring colour, use a lip scrub (one with natural oils and sugar to gently remove dead skin) and make sure to slick on a lip balm, letting it soak in before applying your colour.

Eye spy

Do as the experts do and apply a primer to your eyelid before brushing on a colour to help your eyeshadow stick. If you don’t have a priming product, use a base coat of concealer on your lids or layer on a cream eyeshadow. If greasy lids cause your eyeliner to transfer onto your upper eyelid, look for a waterproof formula to help it stay put, suggests David Vincent, Lise Watier’s International Make Up Artist. To perfect this look, apply a highlighter shade on the brow bone and in the corner of your inner eye by your tear duct, says Carmindy of TLC’s What Not To Wear. Look for a highlighter in a sheer shade that’s matte in a golden champagne tone. And of course, all the pros know you must use a lash curler before applying your eye makeup. Get a natural looking curve by pumping the lash curler from the base of your lashes outwards towards the ends. Then, keep the look minimalist and clean with two coats of mascara and a brow gel to set your eye look in place, says CoverGirl’s makeup artist Greg Wencel.
