Sunscreen decoder: What to look for on your bottle
SPF This acronym stands for “sun protection factor,” which indicates a sunscreen’s ability to block out burn-causing UVB rays. Look for a minimum SPF of 30, which blocks about 97 percent of them.
Broad spectrum A must for any sunscreen, it means you’re protected against both UVB and UVA rays.
Water resistant Sunscreens can be water resistant (none are waterproof) for either 40 or 80 minutes. The label will state which one, as well as directions on reapplying.
Expiry date Pay attention to this, as certain chemicals become less effective over time.
