Ingredients

  • 12 McIntosh apples, peeled and cored

  • 1/3 cup butter

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 1/4 cup maple syrup

  • 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice

  • 1 tsp nutmeg

Instructions

  • Coarsely chop apples. Melt butter in a large saucepan set over medium heat. Stir in apples, water, maple syrup, lemon juice and nutmeg.

  • Reduce heat to medium-low. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until apples break down and start to become saucy, 40 to 45 minutes. You will need to stir often and watch closely near the end of cooking. Then, using a wooden spoon, mash apples until they're as saucy as you like, but still a little chunky.

  • Sauce will keep well, covered and refrigerated, up to 4 days. Marvellous with roast pork or sausages, or with yogurt for breakfast.
