Three-grain power porridge

Stick-to-the-ribs porridge gives you a jump-start on your daily fibre, vitamin, mineral and protein requirements.


Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup milk , preferably 1 per cent
  • 1/4 cup rye flakes
  • 1/4 cup barley flakes
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1/8 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Mix all ingredients together in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Cover and place over medium heat. When mixture comes to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, from 15 to 20 minutes. To microwave, reduce water quantity to 1 cup (250 mL). Mix with remaining ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl. Cover and cook on high for 3 minutes. Stir, cover and continue cooking from 4 to 5 minutes, stirring each minute.
  • Stir in any of the following and enjoy: 2 tbsp (30 mL)brown sugar, 1/4 tsp (1 mL) vanilla, 1/8 (0.5)cinnamon, a pinch of nutmeg.
