Yukon gold

Literature and gold

The Yukon is a surprising literary hub. Pick up a local read at Mac's Fireweed Books, or follow in the footsteps of Jack London, Pierre Berton and Andrew Pyper, and pen your own tale. Pyper researched his novel The Wildfire Season while he was a Berton House writer-in-residence in Dawson City. The territory's famed forest fires, bears and colourful characters provided a wealth of inspiration for his story. And on your way to striking literary gold, visit Murdoch's Gem Shop, where goldsmiths handcraft jewellery from gold nuggets.

Far North cuisine

Hearty bison stew: Sustainably sourced local game meat makes for tasty braises during the long, cold winter months.

Wild rice salad: The firm texture and nutty taste of wild rice pair perfectly with game meat.

Hot springs, bears and beer, oh my!

Start your day in Whitehorse with a soothing dunk at the alfresco Takhini Hot Springs; the super-relaxing 40C waters are full of healing magnesium and calcium. Once you've dried off, head on over to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve for some face time with mountain goats and wood bison. Then quench your thirst at Yukon Brewing, where you can sample a delicious range of award-winning craft beers.

Jonesing for java

Located along the route to the Klondike River Valley, Whitehorse was a boom town during the famed 1897 gold rush. Now it's known more for its thriving café culture and laid-back vibe. Fuel up with an intense cream-cheese-iced cinnamon bun at Baked Café + Bakery or grab a bag of beans to go from one of the two roasters in town: Midnight Sun Coffee Roasters and Bean North Coffee Roasting.
