Get cosy!

Six decor secrets to warm up your space
By Arren Williams
Is your space feeling cold and unwelcoming? Here are six easy ways to give your home that warm and fuzzy feeling:

Try wall-to-wall carpet
No need to turn up the thermostat to create a snug space – simply hang an eye-catching rug on the wall and create a gorgeous focal point. For a more traditional interior, search antique stores for a well-loved Persian or visit IKEA for a colourful Kelim handwoven rug that will complement a clean-lined look.

Put your feet up
How comfy is your old coffee table when you really want to relax? Swap it for an upholstered ottoman and we'll guarantee you won't mind feet on the furniture. Check Sears for chic and simple styles, some of which also provide extra storage.

Redo those drapes
Those floaty cotton drapes are lovely on a bright summer day, but come winter they can get darned drafty. Unless you're in the mood to stitch, check for well-priced ready-made drapes in heavy weaves and rich velvets – these days you can find them everywhere, from Zellers to Home Depot – to make your room look and feel warmer.

Give yourself a bedside treat
There's nothing worse than stepping out of bed onto an icy floor. Brr! For the perfect bedside companion, try IKEA's Rens sheepskin throw rug – a furry treat for feet.

Add a splash of colour
Ask yourself: which feels warmer – a room painted stark white or buttery caramel? There's no need to grab the roller and repaint the whole space, though. Just pick a comforting tone and paint a single wall, either behind a sofa or surrounding a fireplace, to create an extra-cosy feel.

Get the glow
Think you need a fireplace to get that hearth-side glow? Wrong! For instant atmosphere, just replace your regular white light bulbs with pink ones, or go a step further and paint the inside of your lampshades gold.
