Easily one of the sweetest moments of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding day was the duchess’s walk down the aisle with her father-in-law, Prince Charles. After some controversy surrounding whether or not her biological father, Thomas Markle, would be there to witness her big day, her now-husband’s father stepped up to the plate. And apparently, their father-daughter relationship had been going from strength to strength ever since, according to royal expert Katie Nicholl.

A royal source told Vanity Fair that the Royal Family is better than ever, and that Prince Harry’s father is developing a “lovely relationship with the duchess.” And despite the familial hiccup before their big day, it hasn’t changed their bond: “Charles has been very supportive of Meghan and everything she is going through with her own father. He’s got a real soft spot for her and thinks she’s the best thing to have happened to Harry,” the source said.

And while indulging in some rest and relaxation over the summer, Meghan and Harry counted Castle of Mey among their holiday destinations. The couple spent some quality time in the Scottish highlands with Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, who have long loved the region.

And the duke and duchess’s penchant for the countryside is clearly winning her some brownie points with her royal in-laws. “The wedding was a real turning point. Charles showed so much love towards Harry and Meghan, and I think Harry will be eternally grateful to his papa for stepping in and giving Meghan’s hand in marriage,” the source told the glossy. “The bond between them is very close.” It can’t have been easy for Meghan to give up the walk with her own father, but thankfully the 37-year-old has been welcomed with open arms into her husband’s family – who are clearly as head-over-heels for her as the rest of the world.
