Five cool things to do this week (August 2 to 8)

Look for buried treasure, eat cotton candy at a fair, make a s'mores cake with the fam, and watch Federer and Nadal battle it out.

1. Hit the courts

The Rogers Cups is sure to serve up another exciting year of tennis as powerhouses like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal hit the courts in Montreal, and Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka head to Toronto. Take some notes from the pros over the long weekend and then hit the driveway and brush up on your forehand.

2. Head for fair ground

We can smell the barrels of hay and the livestock already as agricultural societies across the country gear up for their annual local fairs. Browse the crafts, fall in awe at the petting zoo, indulge in a few spins of cotton candy and definitely don’t miss the tractor pull or demo derby.

3. Find buried treasure

Their trash can be your treasure this weekend as tables unfold for annual yard sales. Miles upon miles of old-to-them and new-to-you finds could bring you a bag full of rare knick-knacks and priceless art. (Be picky, you don’t want to have to organize your own sale the following weekend!)

4. Roast marshmallows

Is there anything better than a hot marshmallow served on a stick? Or, one placed between two graham crackers and a square of dark chocolate? Not really. This long weekend, whether camping or in the comforts of your own backyard (just as easy to do on a BBQ as they are on an open-fire), roast-up a summer fave under the stars with family and friends. And, if you’re feeling ambitious, try out our recipe for a Frozen s’mores cake. Yum.

5. Read ‘Me before You’

Me before You by Jojo Moyes is best described as an unexpected, heart-wrenching love story between two people who may have otherwise never met if it weren’t for their extreme circumstances. Since it is now available in paperback, it’s the perfect read to tote with you if you’re heading to cottage country or the beach for the long weekend. As you read, cast your characters – earlier this year MGM secured the literary rights for a feature film. Plus, check out our Summer Reading Guide for more beach read ideas.
