Valentine's Day is just around the corner and we're in the mood for some sensational, heart-melting reads to set the tone. So we consulted Indigo's VP of Trade Books, Bahram Olfati, who shared his picks for best love stories. Be warned: these books will make your heart go pitter-patter.
1. One Day by David Nicholls
A love story that gents can read too; with a clever structure, and characters that are so believable that you feel you know them. Nicholls’ theme is the danger of not recognizing what is right in front of you as life is passing you by.
2. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
The greatest love stories put some obstacle between its lovers — and what obstacle could seem more insurmountable than time itself?
3. Princess Bride by William Goldman
This book is a touchstone for a certain generation, thanks to the movie, and it’s a love story kids can enjoy. This loving send-up of classic adventure fiction is playful and charming, romantic, and often hilarious.
4. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
No list of love stories would be complete without this, and with its 200th anniversary approaching, its themes, relevance and appeal have not waned in the slightest.
5. Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx
A tiny and perfect book that portrays the sadness of unrequited love against a beautifully described natural background, in language that is entirely accessible.
