Rumour has it: These books are coming to a theatre near you!

Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn

What it's about: When his wife Amy goes missing on their fifth wedding anniversary Nick Dunne suddenly finds himself prime suspect number one. Did he kill the wife he claims to love? Or is this story a little more complicated?

On the big screen: The film rights to this best-seller were snapped up by 20th Century Fox (for a reported seven-figure sum) and Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde), Bruna Papandrea (Milk) and Leslie Dixon (Mrs. Doubtfire) are already onboard to produce. Ben Affleck is also rumoured to be attached. Author Gillian Flynn is set to write the script.

Winter's Tale, by Mark Helprin

What it's about: Set near the turn of the 20th century, an orphan attempts to rob a mansion on New York’s Upper West Side, and an unexpected romance blossoms between himself and a dying girl.

On the big screen: This amazing story has earned a big-name cast. Think Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind), Colin Farrell (In Bruges), Will Smith (Men in Black), and Russell Crowe (Gladiator). Though no official date has been announced, the film is scheduled to release this fall.

The Night Circus, by Erin Morgenstern

What it's about: The circus arrives without warning and is open for one night only. This is the scene of a fierce competition between two young magicians and only one can remain standing. But when love begins to cloud this curious contest, the fates of the entire circus are suddenly at stake.

On the big screen: Jeff Clifford and David Heyman (both worked on the Harry Potter films) are set to produce with Moira Buffini (Jane Eyre) penning the script.

The Rosie Project, by Graeme Simsion

What it's about: Don Tillman is a genetics professor who has never been on a second date, so he decides to create 'The Wife Project.' This questionnaire is meant to help him find his perfect, punctual, non-drinking, non-smoking mate, but he finds Rosie instead.

On the big screen: Michael Costigan (Prometheus) and Matt Tolmach (The Da Vinci Code) will produce this flick for Sony Pictures. The all-star cast has not yet been chosen.

Ender's game, by Orson Scott Card

What it's about: Set in the future, mankind is under threat by a third alien invasion. The world's most talented children are sent to a survival-of-the-fittest battle school to become future fleet commanders. As young Ender Wiggin's genius becomes revealed, the pressure on him to conquer every rigorous military test builds. 

On the big screen: Cult fans have long awaited a movie adaption of the Ender-series book (movie talks started in the 1980s). The sci-fi thriller already has two key ingredients for success: Ben Kingsley (Schindler's List) and Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones). Added bonus: Stargate actor Gavin Hood wrote and produced the film. Release Date: November 1st, 2013

Reconstructing Amelia, by Kimberly McCreight

What it's about: This debut novel centres on a workaholic single mother who, grappling with her teenage daughter’s apparent suicide, attempts to reconstruct the events prior to Amelia's death. She soon finds herself attempting to navigate the dark, secretive world of teenage social media.

On the big screen: Nicole Kidman is believed to be working with HBO films to get this best-seller on the silver screen. Rumours suggest that Kidman will be this film's executive producer as well as its star.

Where'd You Go Bernadette, by Maria Semple

What it's about: Bernadette Fox, a former genius architect, lives in Seattle and hates the city with a passion. After her daughter Bee brings home a stellar report card Bernadette promises her daughter a family trip to Antarctica, before mysteriously disappearing without a trace.

On the big screen: Annapurna Pictures and Color Force have snagged the movie rights to Semple's hilarious novel. The screenplay will be left to Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (co-writters of 500 Days of Summer) while Semple steps in as executive producer, alongside Bryan Unkeless (The Hunger Games) and Ted Schipper (Zero Dark Thirty).
