Four tips to create a gorgeous outdoor living space

Backyard living

We loved the house, but it was the backyard’s potential that really sold us, ” says homeowner Andrew Bockner. An avid outdoor entertainer, the principal designer for Andrew Richard Designs knew the huge deck would provide endless opportunities for easy summer get-togethers. To make the most of the space, he divided the deck into three living zones: living room, dining room and lounge. Then he went to work furnishing it with hard-wearing woven-resin pieces, water-resistant outdoor fabrics and exotic potted plants. “It’s like a private sanctuary,” he says. “Being back there feels like you escape the city just a bit.” And since the birth of their daughter, Avery, he and his wife, Melissa, are enjoying the expanded living space in a whole new way. “It doubles as a great play area for Avery and her friends. She loves to run around and then curl up with us on the daybed,” he says.

Tip: The key to making the most of your space (even in a backyard) is defining each living zone. Click here for their backyard planning guide.

Seating area

Cozy up your space with plenty of seating, a coffee table, an outdoor rug and lots of weather-resistant cushions. Candles in lanterns set the mood for entertaining.

Comfortable dining room

Plan to have your eating area closest to the kitchen, so it’s convenient to carry everything in and out. Dress your table with all-weather pots and plants for a chic centrepiece that can live outside.

Outdoor lounge

For ultimate R&R, create a tranquil nook with a large daybed. Then cover it with a wooden gazebo or a trellis and overgrown vines. Get even more privacy by adding drapes, and finish with soft lighting.
