Emma's five favourite things July

Lovely stationery

Vancouver based photographer Janis Nicolay spent a weekend in Victoria, BC and posted her mini tour of places to go and things to see in the coastal town. The next time I’m in the city I’m definitely going to check out the Regional Assembly of Text. It’s set up in the lobby of a stunning heritage office building (with to-die-for tile floors) and is full of notebooks, recipe boxes, stationery and even vintage typewriters to create your own buttons!

Bag that plant

I’m always on the lookout for interesting ways to display my houseplants, especially my larger trees and palms. I love this idea from Apartment34.com of using a canvas tote or laundry bag as a planter. (Obviously, you would place this over your standard pot.) Perfect for those rooms where you want to achieve a monochromatic palette.

Captain of a craft

I found this amazing DIY through Jan over at Poppytalk. This is a great take on the hugely popular captain’s mirror trend that began with BDDW and has filtered all the way down to Target (check out our Get The Look Feature for Under $100 in the August issue of the magazine!) In this step-by-step DIY tutorial by Melissa Esplin, she's filled the centre with artwork instead of a mirror. A fun project for a kid’s room or cottage.

Black, white and gold

Stylist Marcus Hay and photographer Kat Teutsch have produced a stunning series of images called New York Stories inspired by the lives of fictional women in New York City. They have done three to date but my favourite by far is the tale of Ophelia Sable Le Blanc. The black, white and gold images are very inspiring.

More with macramé

If there is one things I’m hankering over right now it is one of these beautiful macramé textiles from Los Angeles based Brook&Lyn. I think one would look stunning above a fireplace and would be a nice change from a mirror. You need to be fast though because they sell out quickly.
