6 things to do now so the holidays won't kick your butt this year

Tackle these few tasks this weekend, and you'll thank yourself big time in December.

I'm one of those people who think holiday music and decorations should not be seen or heard until December 1. But getting a jump on some things ahead of time (so that December doesn't turn into a comedy of errors) just makes common sense. Remember: there’s only one more weekend left in November before you’ll be streaming the sweet sounds of Boney M’s Christmas album on repeat.

1. Plan your big holiday meals this weekend. Seriously. Make a list of ingredients and divide it up by store so you know exactly where to purchase everything you need.

2. Take a look at your holiday linens, serving dishes, silver and stemware. Dry clean, hand-wash, polish or replace those items over the next two weekends.

3. Put your orders in for items like turkeys, flowers, caterers, event rentals. Suppliers are busy this time of year so make sure you don’t miss out.

4. Make a run to the liquor store and stock up on everything you think you might need, from champagne to sherry.

5. Make a list of presents you need to purchase and then head to the shopping malls for a few hours after work one night. It will be less busy than on the weekend and certainly less busy than the week before Christmas.

6. Purchase all of your wrapping supplies and set up an area in your house as a wrapping station. Find a spot for the tape and scissors – the two items that are most likely to wander – and make sure they never leave the area. Wrap presents as you purchase them.
