Bethenny Frankel has teamed with California Almonds to promote snack food month (yes, that's a thing) in the U.S. We spoke with the famous reality star and founder of Skinnygirl to get her top tips for staving off hunger:

Q: What defines a smart snack to you?
A: Eating anything out of a large portioned bag, box or container is an invitation to overdoing it. A smart snack should have a limited number of calories-200 is ideal. A snack should satisfy and accomplish a goal: whether you're craving sugar or sweets or actually hungry or intentionally spoiling your appetite so you don't overeat at a meal or a party, snacking should have purpose. Snacking shouldn't be something you do out of habit or for the sake of doing or because some diet told you, you need to snack at 10 and 4 p.m. You will learn to know your body and whether you need to snack or not.

Q: Should people snack at their desks or walk away?
A: I think you should always have snacks accessible. I created Skinnygirl daily on-the-go nutrition bars as a healthy snack for womens' purses. Baggies of almonds or soybeans, hummus and wheat pretzels or dark chocolate with almonds are great snacks too.

Q: Is snacking after dinner recommended?
A: I would say that snacking is recommended at any time if you are genuinely hungry, do it sensibly and in a reasonable portion.

Q: What are yourthree favourite snack foods?
A: Pretzel crisps and hummus, Skinnygirl dark chocolate multigrain pretzel bars and dark chocolate with almonds.

Q: What about those with a sweet tooth? What’s an OK snack for them?
A: There is no bad. I eat chocolate whether in ice cream or cookie or dark chocolate form. No one ever got fat on a small indulgence and I believe in allowing rather than depriving. I created Skinnygirl bars so people could have protein, carbs and satisfy their sweet tooth and hunger in one shot.
