Five quick ways to turn up the heat on your summer beauty routine

Summer hair and makeup tips

The summer breeze and sun really heat things up when it comes to beauty, but they also require a unique regime. Here's five tips to look your best this summer:

Spritz your skin
Nothing feels better on your skin when it's hot and steamy than a cooling mist of water. It helps calm and moisturize your complexion, and makes it look dewy rather than slick. I tuck one into my tote - perfect for beach days or air plane cabins. My favourite is La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water, because it's packed with minerals and vitamins to soothe dry skin.

Condition your hair
Summer sun and wind can whip your hair into a frizzy frenzy. Straight locks end up like straw and natural curls go haywire. A leave-in conditioner like John Frieda's Frizz-Ease Emergency Treatment Leave-in Conditioning Spray is one way to calm your style. Spritz it in after your shower or dip in the pool, and don't rinse out. But remember, nothing beats a hat or scarf to prevent frizzies and colour loss when the sun's shining.

Minimize your makeup
Vivid colours may dominate spring's makeup palette, but minimal colour and bronzy metallics are your best bet this summer. All you need is mascara, an SPF15 tinted lip conditioner (I like Bobbi Brown's Lip Tint SPF15) and a bronzer such as Christian Dior Terra Bella Sun Powder. For a dressy day or night look, add a vivid red lipstick.

Protect vulnerable spots
When you apply sunscreen, don't forget your most tender spots: hair part, nose, top of ears and toes. A lip balm with an SPF15 works nicely for lips - I use Shiseido Sun Protection Lip Treatment SPF36. Apply it often and generously.

Soak it up
Instead of pressing powder into your skin throughout the day (it can look cakey and collect in fine lines when it's hot) tuck a small package of blotting tissues into your purse. Those packed with micro-fine powders can soak up excess oil and perspiration. Try Lancome Blotting Papers.
