3 investment pieces that are well worth the money

If one great accessory has the power to pull a whole outfit together, just imagine the power of three.

"Quality over quantity" isn't exactly an easy motto to follow — think of all the trendy dresses and cozy knits priced under $20! And while we love a great deal (who doesn't?), we also advocate dropping some dough on investment pieces where possible. Whether designed with luxe fabrics, a beautifully tailored silhouette or in a shade that will transcend trend overhaul, here are the three pieces we recommend spending a little extra on.

1. The timeless blazer

From job interviews to parent-teacher night, there are times when you'll need to look pulled together in a flash. A well-cut blazer is the answer. It's important to zero in on a silhouette that works with your body type: If you’ve got a larger bust, look to figure-flattering princess seams that nip in at the waist. For more petite frames, make sure your jacket hits just below your waist, not mid-way down your thigh.

2. The right shoes

Shoes that are stylish and comfortable are truly a win-win. While the cut and heel height should suit your tastes, you should choose colours that will work well with your wardrobe. Neutrals are usually a safe bet, but brighter shades add a jolt of fun to monochrome looks.

3. The staple bag

Since most of us carry a bag everyday, consider investing in one made of real leather — or a high-quality vegan version. Details like sturdy handles and metal feet will extend the life of your bag. Make sure to also choose a size and shape that works for your lifestyle: Do you need to lug around an iPad? Do you bring your lunch every day? Make sure your life fits inside.
