Getting glamorous

Our second annual Girlfriends Makeover contest inspired twice the number of entries as our first – more than 3,000. With your online votes, we narrowed the entries to 10 women, and posed the question: What would be your fantasy "girls' night out?" Here are our amazing winners – all dressed up and ready to celebrate.

MICHELLE LAWRENCE, 34, middle school vice-principal, Toronto Hair We relaxed Michelle's roots, then gave her a short-angled bob with layers around the front and gradual layering in the back. Sweeping bangs and removable highlighted extensions modernize the look. Makeup Revlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss in Pearl Plum, $10, enhances Michelle's stellar smile. FIDELIA NELSON, 34, community recreation coordinator, Toronto Hair Natural-looking extensions were woven into Fidelia's braids. The finishing touch: pretty face-framing bangs. Makeup Fidelia sports a natural flush using Revlon Cream Blush in Blushing Mauve, $12. Friendship Twenty memorable years. Michelle on Fidelia "She's my voice of reason. She can solve any problem." Fidelia on Michelle "She's got the same sarcastic sense of humour I do – we understand each other and don't take things to heart." Dream evening A movie premiere in L.A.

COREEN ELDER, 32, account manager, Victoria Hair Having never had a short 'do, Coreen was up for losing a foot of hair to our expert's deft scissors. The result is a layered bob with sexy, long bangs. Makeup Revlon Illuminance Crème Shadow in Moonlit Jewels (a pretty plum shade), $10, creates a soft, smoky eye. COURTNEY MARSH, 34, environmental technical specialist, Delta, B.C. Hair We broke up Courtney's triangular shaped cut and removed the weight in the back, which loosened her natural curls and increased volume at the crown. Honey-gold highlights enhance her original brown hue. Makeup Revlon Skinlights Instant Skin Brightener in Golden Light, $20, makes skin radiant. Friendship Seven years of constant laughter. Coreen on Courtney "All we do is laugh when we're together – and that I couldn't live without." Courtney on Coreen "She helps me relax and let loose – and not to sweat the small stuff." Dream evening Adventure and dancing in New York City, and maybe a nightcap or two.

ZAHAVA GRINFELD, 44, project director of a residential complex, Ile Bizard, Que. Hair We balanced Zahava's bottom-heavy triangular shape by trimming the front, then gradually moving to the back. Her hair got a wheat-coloured blond rinse with sun-kissed highlights. Makeup Zahava's eyes pop in Almay Triple Effect in Blackest Black mascara, $8. MIRA ANIDJAR, 47, office administrator, Thornhill, Ont. Hair Mira's curls were too heavy and long for her face. The fix: cut hair curl by curl and shorten layers in the back. A dark ash-brown rinse covers any grey. Makeup Mira's smoky eyes get cool definition with Revlon ColorStay Liquid Liner in Black, $10. Friendship These sisters talk on the phone daily. Zahava on Mira "Living apart for 15 years hasn't affected our close relationship. Mira is always there for me – as a sister and a best friend." Mira on Zahava "She inspires me to be more free-spirited and spontaneous." Dream evening Jetting off to Paris (first class, of course) for an elegant evening of wining and dining.

VALDEEN HILLIER, 47, Laura's mother, and stay-at-home mom of triplets, Richmond, B.C. Hair We added texture to Valdeen's hair, but left length in the back and sides to create softness and movement. Inspired by her blue eyes, we chose an auburn shade with blond highlights. Makeup Valdeen's skin tone gets a burst of warmth with Revlon Powder Blush in Tawny Peach, $12, dusted on the apples of her cheeks. LAURA HILLIER, 21, lab assistant, Delta, B.C. Hair Five inches were cut off to give Laura a younger, layered cut. Her natural blond hair received a strawberry rinse that also gives it body. Makeup Revlon ColorStay Pressed Powder in Light, $17, helps Laura's skin look flawless and shine-free. Friendship Now that Laura's an adult, their relationship has evolved into a deep friendship. Valdeen on Laura"She taught me to be more tolerant of others and their views." Laura on Valdeen "She taught me how to be strong in moments of weakness – to tough it out." Dream evening Dinner and a show in New York City.

BERNADETTE MCCARTHY, 43, dentist, Miramichi, N.B. Hair We gave Bernadette's one-length bob a Sienna Miller-inspired bias cut. We also added chunky blond highlights to the front and sides but left the back a darker shade for added depth. Makeup Revlon Cream Blush in Not So Nude, $12, enhances Bernadette's high cheekbones. MELANIE FLANAGAN, 43, stay-at-home mom of three, Barnaby, N.B. Hair We gave Melanie a wash-and-wear bias cut to give her hair volume. Partial highlights around the front and top make grey roots less noticeable. Makeup A swipe of Revlon LipGlide Full Color & Shine in Patent Leather Pink, $14, ensures that Melanie's bling isn't the only thing that sparkles. Friendship Friends since Grade 1 (37 years ago). Bernadette on Melanie "She's the one person who I can tell anything to without being judged." Melanie on Bernadette "She's my substitute sister – I value her support and friendship." Dream evening Travelling to Tuscany – without the husbands and kids – for dinner, wine and girl talk.
