Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). 2. Combine all salsa ingredients and let stand at room temperature. 3. Meanwhile, top baguette slices with Gouda and place on a cookie sheet. Bake until bread is crispy and cheese melted. 4. Remove from oven, top each canapé with a bit of strawberry salsa and garnish with a small leaf of fresh basil. 5. Serve warm or cold. Suggestions: Many kinds of cheese can be used in place of the Gouda in this recipe, so go with the inspiration of the moment--Swiss, Cheddar, Colby, Mozzarella, Oka, etc. For a milder flavour and smoother texture, try Brie or Camembert. Take advantage of summer's bounty and prepare salsa with peaches, pears or whatever's in season.
