Pay it forward with food

Buy a meal, give a meal

Mealshare, a social enterprise that connects local restaurants with local charities, operates on the premise of the "buy one, give one" model. The idea is simple: Visit a partner restaurant and order a designated Mealshare menu item for your meal. When you do, another meal will be donated to a local charity, at no extra cost. With partner restaurants across Canada in Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria, you can turn a night out into something extra-special.

Check out Mealshare for more restaurant info across Canada.

Love at First Bite4Bite

We're smitten with Nature's Path Love Crunch Granola, not only because it comes in really delicious flavours (our fave is Gingerbread), but also because for every bag of Love Crunch you buy, Nature's Path donates the equivalent in cash and organic food to local food banks (up to $1 million a year) through their social charity, Bite4Bite. Nature's Path products also uses ingredients sourced locally, organically and ethically from Fairtrade farmers. Look out for the Bite4Bite tab on packaging! Available at grocery stores across Canada.

The Token Program

In downtown Vancouver, Save on Meats houses a fully licensed diner, a butcher shop and retail store. But that's not all - Save on Meats also houses a community commissary kitchen and works with many community groups, educational institutions and non-profits to improve local food security. They launched a highly touted Token Program in 2012, making it an easy way to support those in need. Tokens are purchased in-store or online for $2.25, then purchasers can choose to either hand tokens out directly, or have Save on Meats donate them to one of its community partners. Tokens can then be redeemed for a nutritious hot Breakfast Sandwich during opening hours. Visit Save on Meats at 43 West Hasting Street, Vancouver BC.

Benefit Brew

Benefit Brew is an annual charity project by Victoria-based Phillips Beer where they create a custom craft brew for a cause. To do so, Phillips makes a call out to the community to choose the charity they want to support. The beer is then named after the charity, given a custom-designed label, and full proceeds are donated (approx. $10,000) post-sales. The beer is brewed in mid-December, and the beer is released for purchase in January. Visit Benefit Brew for more details.
