Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup ( 50 mL) butter
  • 3 tbsp ( 45 mL) all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup ( 150 mL) brown sugar
  • 1 cup ( 250 mL) cold milk or cream
  • 1/4 cup ( 50 mL) brandy or rum
  • 1/4 tsp ( 1 mL) vanilla

This rich sauce enhances coffee cake, but try it drizzled over gingerbread, spice cake or vanilla ice cream.

Instructions

  • Melt butter in a small saucepan set over medium heat. In a medium-size bowl, stir flour with sugar. Then whisk into melted butter until mixture is moistened. Stir in milk or cream until smooth. Cook, whisking frequently, until thickened and smooth, about 5 minutes. Stir in brandy and vanilla. Remove from heat
  • Serve right away over coffee cake. Or cover and refrigerate for up to a week. Reheat just before serving.
