Let’s face it: Between the news, social media and studies that undermine the health virtues of delicious foods, we’re bombarded with bad news all week along. With that in mind, we created The Weekly Woot, a burst of the sweetest, funniest, weirdest and all-around feel-good stories to kick off your weekend on a high note. (Oh, and we’ve made room for one piece of bad news — because we keep it real like that.)

Woot! 66.6% of groundhogs believe spring will come early. Despite some reservation from Ontario’s curmudgeonly Wiarton Willie, Canada’s other notable groundhogs — Nova Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam and Balzac Billy of Alberta — did not see their shadows on Feb. 2, which means Canucks can be cautiously optimistic that spring will arrive early this year. (For the record, their predictions were further corroborated by Pennsylvania's foremost weather-predicting woodchuck, Punxsutawney Phil. Sorry, Willie.)

Woot! Indigenous poet Mary Black goes viral. Released in October, Black’s spoken-word piece, called “Quiet,” addresses the painful legacy of gendered violence, addiction, residential schools and silencing experienced by Canada’s indigenous people. Thanks to Black’s powerful delivery, the video has been viewed more than 127,000 times.

Woot! Puppies! Playing football! Well, sort of. Team Fluff will face off against rival Team Ruff on Sunday as 49 adorable (and adoptable!) pooches storm the field for Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl XII. Whether the pups will engage in any coordinated play — and not just ear-biting — is anyone’s guess. We can, however, confirm some other furry special guests: a gaggle of chicken cheerleaders, a kitty-filled half-time show and an appearance by assistant referee Stanley the Skunk.

Woot! Bruce Springsteen gives an 88-year-old Toronto woman the best birthday gift ever. Step down, Courtney Cox. At the only Canadian stop of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's tour, The Boss pulled Evelyn Raftery on stage to sway with him to “Dancing in the Dark.” Evelyn’s daughter brought a poster announcing her mother’s upcoming birthday to the sold-out show on Wednesday, successfully attracting the rocker’s attention. Don't even try topping that for your mom's next birthday.

Woot! Time launches a site for young women.
Motto is dedicated to supporting millennial women to “blaze new trails and redefine success.” It features pieces from Barack Obama, Shonda Rhimes and Marie Kondo, along with cool interactives, including this pay gap calculator that gives women an idea of what their salary bump would be if they were a man.

WTF! During Jian Ghomeshi's trial, a media lawyer requests that a photo of a complainant in a bikini be made public. Thankfully, the presiding judge, William Horkins, didn’t think that was a great idea and denied the request. Here are 10 photos that are just as relevant to the facts of the case. Want to know more about the rest of the trial? Chatelaine has it covered.
