Let Vienna's charming markets and enchanting Alpine traditions inspire your festive celebrations. These magical Viennese outdoor markets are full of wonder — and all dressed up for the season.
Ry Yeowell/ Getty ImagesKnown around the world for their charming, historic atmosphere, Viennese cafés have always been a warming gathering place where people come to read newspapers and discuss daily affairs. With many dating back to the 19th century, like Café Museum and Café Central, these cozy spots have played a large part in shaping the culture of the people who live here — so much so that in 2011 UNESCO recognized the traditional Viennese coffee house culture as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
As winter approaches, Vienna’s picturesque public squares transform into a holiday wonderland, a tradition dating back to 1772. Stop by the Old Viennese Christmas Market and let the scent of baked goods and Christmas music fuel your festive spirit as you browse hundreds of stands selling everything from ornaments and gifts to eats and sweets. Grab a mug of mulled wine or hot cocoa at the Rathausplatz and then stroll along the promenades to admire City Hall Park, where the manicured trees are strung with thousands of twinkly lights.

Handcrafted decorations and rustic holiday inspiration abound. (We love these beautiful, painted Nutcracker dolls for holiday decorating.)

It’s packed with more than 450 different formal celebrations: You can waltz the night away at everything from the world-famous Opera Ball to the Vienna Philharmonic Ball, the Hunter’s Ball and, largest of all, the Coffee House Owners’ Ball. Anyone can go to a Viennese ball, where tickets average 100 euros each. The only requirement is you must be formally dressed: floor-length gowns for ladies and tuxes for the gents.
A light dusting of icing sugar makes each buttery cookie a blissful snow-topped bite. Serve these butter pecan crescents after dinner with a hot mug of tea or a frothy cappuccino.
