How to get good wine cheap

There was a great blog post on drinking by Sarah Treleaven last week — I’ve got admire a gal with the courage to admit she enjoys a good drink, and often! My husband and I fall into the same camp — we love wine. At night, after the kids are in bed, we both enjoy a glass while we cook together. It’s a time to relax, bond and talk over the events of the day.

The thing is, booze is expensive. When we first got married, that didn't bother us — we easily splurged on wine, shelling out $25 or more on each bottle. Now that we’re on a budget, we’re not willing to spend that much. It’s meant cutting down on our price point — nowadays we look for decent plonk in the range of $15 or less.
This is a distinct trend among my friends — most people we know have cut down their spending on wine. No, they’re not cutting back on the number of bottles they buy, just the cost of the bottles.
So far, we have found some good ones. Two of our go-to whites for summer cost less than $15 — here in Ontario we can get a Henry of Pelham Sauvignon Blanc for $14.95, and we also love Tic Tok from Australia, who makes a great Chardonnay for $14. I have yet to find a wine I’d drink again for under $10, but I am open to suggestions.
I also know people who are making their own wine — not for the feint of heart, however (maybe it’s just me, but I have yet to have someone serve me a tasty glass of homemade plonk).
My question for you — what your favourite cheap bottles are right now? And if you do make your own wine, are there any tips on how to kick it up and make sure your batch is a cut above the rest?
