Bright lighting

Art and functionality collide in statement lights — like this one by Toronto-based design firm hollis + morris. Look out for an influx of branch-shaped chandeliers, massive wooden light fixtures and handcrafted, unique pendants made from wire.

Canadian content

EQ3 has gathered 10 of the country's brightest emerging designers to create a capsule of accessories and furnishings called EQ3 Assembly. The entire collection, including the geometric dressing table (pictured above) by Montreal-based designer Zoë Mowat, will make its debut at this year's IDS.

Statement chairs

This year's show is chockablock with bold, beautiful chairs clad in materials like leather and velvet. Don't miss Caviar20's Decades of Chairs exhibit, which showcases stand-out chairs from the 20th century.

Natural elements

IDS's guest of honour Tom Dixon acknowledged that right now is "the most exciting time to be a designer" — a sentiment that's reflected throughout the show. The Toronto Ice Kitchen (pictured above) is the beginning of a year-long collaboration between Dixon and Caesarstone, and inspired by Canada's frozen lakes. This kitchen is the first of four kitchen installations to be presented across the world, each inspired by Ice, Fire, Earth and Air. Don't miss IDS's two additional design powerhouses in the speaker lineup — Ora-ïto, and Lee Broom

Tech meets tradition

The "Fusion" stool from Studio Lulo (pictured above) is made from 180 individual pieces of birch using 3D–modelling software and a laser cutter.

Minimalism

Simple decor with major presence is a big feature at the show this year, proving that less really is more. The lamp (pictured above) by Toronto-based designer Shane Krepakevich of Mercury Bureau is a minimalist's dream: it relies on gravity to pull its nylon cords into a pyramid.

Pastel hues

Soft pinks, blues and yellows are here to stay. From paint colours and chairs to the beautiful barn door by 1925 Workbench (pictured above), just try to count how many times you spot these tones around the show.
