Why thigh gap jewellery is actually brilliant

A designer from Singapore set out to show the world adorning a thigh gap is as absurd as longing for one.

What is beauty in 2016? A collarbone that can support a whack of change, big boobs, a rib cage that pokes out from underneath them, a flat belly, a waist that you can hide behind a piece of A4 paper, a booty that just doesn't quit and slim, toned legs to support all of that.

And what better way to be smug and celebrate your thigh gap than wrapping your perfect, perky butt with a fine gold chain that features a charm that dangles where that glorious gap lives? Starting at $180, you can live this dream.

Well, not really. The very real-looking site featuring six beautiful designs was created to show that the idea of thigh gap jewellery is only as absurd as the ideal of a thigh gap itself. Soo Kyung Bae, a design student at the National University of Singapore, is the incredibly clever creative behind the site.

"I saw this as an opportunity to design a provocative artefact that sparks discussion and reflection about such body trends," she wrote to Chatelaine in an email. In particular, Bae wanted to highlight that these trends are physically unattainable for many. "There is a huge misconception of thigh gaps’ achievability that led to some women and young girls to engage in extreme dieting," she said. "But in actuality, bone structure plays a critical role in defining whether or not you can have a thigh gap."

Bae is a big believer in discursive design as a tool to stimulate public conversation and she's done just that. Since launching the site last week, she's seen initial reactions range from "shocked, enraged, and confused." But upon discovering the true message of Bae's project, most have thanked her for her efforts. "I'm impressed. Rarely do I comment on posts, but this is truly genius," wrote one commenter.
