Weight loss

Weight loss can occur from eating less or exercising more, or as a result of an eating disorder, such as anorexia nervosa.  Certain health conditions, such as hyperthyroidism and cancer, can also cause weight loss. If a person is overweight or obese, losing even a little weight will improve health and reduce risk for high blood pressure and heart disease.

Healthy weight loss

Slow and steady While rapid weight loss can be gratifying, following a fad diet is often not a permanent form of weight loss. Eating a healthy diet and aiming for a loss of one to two pounds a week is far more effective for permanent weight loss. Cutting 500 calories daily can result in the loss of about a pound a week (3,500 calories equals 1 pound of fat). The lowest intake per day recommended for women is 1,200 calories.

The right foods Eating healthy foods that satisfy hunger, such as fibre-rich whole grains, salads, broth-based soups, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and beans, may also assist in weight loss.

Exercise The most effective weight-loss plans includes regular physical activity that boosts metabolism. Adults require 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day, most days of the week.

Talk to your doctor An inability to lose weight despite a healthy lifestyle could be due to a medical condition, such as hypothyroidism or polycystic ovary syndrome.
